Description

Sh2 -54 is a large visible emission nebula in the constellation Serpent.
It is an extended H II region in which star formation are active; in its interior there are a large number of protostars, some even of great mass, and several infrared sources. To this generation of young stars is added a second one, about 4-5 million years old, which constitutes the bright open cluster NGC 6604.
Sh2-54 is part of a vast nebula system that also includes the nearby Eagle Nebula and the Omega Nebula, which are also linked to two large OB associations, known as Serpens OB1 and Serpens OB2.
