Charles Messier included it in its catalog on September 25, 1764.

Its stars form, according to Webb, "a noble object arranged as an oblique cross, with a pair of brighter stars on each arm." At a distance of 4,200 light years, its angular diameter of approximately 20 ’, which corresponds linearly to 25 light years. It is situated in an intermediate age range of around 220 million years, according to the Sky Catalog 2000. Its brightest member is a giant yellow star of magnitude 7.9 and of spectral type GO, which corresponds to an absolute magnitude of –1.5, or at a luminosity of 900 Suns, the stars that predominate in this cluster being bluish white. In its surroundings, at 30 ’to the S, NGC 1907 is distinguished, a beautiful small group of stars of 11 and 12 magnitude, enclosed in an area of only 7’.
