Description

SH2-173, or The Phantom of the Opera Nebula, this one actually resembles its nickname!

It is an H II region 77 light-years in diameter, located about 8800 light-years away. It is located on the Perseus Arm, one of the major spiral arms of the Milky Way.  It contains a large number of young stars, of which there would be at least 7 of them among the main responsible for the ionisation of gases, the hottest of which is catalogued as BD+60 39.

No magnitude measurements for this nebula are available that I could find, all I can say it is very dim, only showing up in Ha decently using 10 min sub exposures. I was going to collect more Ha data on this target, but after a quick stack, I thought this was enough. The data was clean and enough of it to pull out the Ha above the background. I tried to bring out some of the surrounding nebulosity, but this is significantly dimmer than the main nebula and would require much more integration time.

This is the first image since the fires calmed down, back to clear skies I hope!

CS and be well
Dan.
