Description

This object is an edge-on lenticular galaxy located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a southern declination of -27 degrees. This 11.8 magnitude galaxy spans almost 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 120,000 light years.

The dust lane structure of this galaxy is fascinating - I am glad that we have an edge-on view, which I think is a much better perspective than face-on for this galaxy. The dust lane looks a bit like a wide tornado, with a large amount of vertical depth to it. The bright bulge of this galaxy looks more rectangular than spherical.

The galaxy just below this object is IC 879, not NGC 879 as identified in the Astrobin mouseover. Several sources say that this galaxy is the same distance away as NGC 5078, but others suggest that IC 879 is 10 million light years further away, which would be too far away to be having interaction. My best guess is that there is some interaction happening here. IC 879 looks it is experiencing some disturbance in the galaxy arms, and the distorted dust lane of NGC 5078 could be the result of disturbance as well.

Many faint galaxies are visible in the background.
