Description

This image of the Flaming Star Nebula in the constellation Auriga was shot at two locations using the same telescope but through different filters. The first location was at Assateague National Seashore which is a relatively dark sky site (SQM readings of ~ 20.84) so no external filters were used.  The second location was in my back yard which is fairly light polluted (SQM readings of ~ 18.8) so a dual-band nebula enhancement filter (IDAS NBZ) was used.  The separate sessions were combined into one integrated RGB data set and processed using PixInsight.

The Flaming Star Nebula is lit by the nearby star AE Aurigae.  It is cataloged as IC 405 and is a glowing emission and reflection nebula that lies approximately 1,500 light-years from Earth.
