Description

Located in the constellation Draco and nearly 44 million light-years from Earth, M102 is a difficult to classify galaxy that is also recognized by NASA as NGC 5866. An edge-on lenticular structure, per Wiki "M102 is a galaxy listed in the Messier Catalogue that cannot be unambiguously identified" in part because "Messier didn't include the coordinates of M102 on his catalogue".  Adding to the confusion is the fact that another galaxy is also commonly described as the Spindle Galaxy, NGC 3115 (or Caldwell 53) in the constellation Sextans.

This LRGB mono image is a nice contrast the the under-sampled DSLR image obtained in June of 2022. Version one of this image is the same framing and cropping as the 2022 DSLR version, whereas the final version is more cropped in to reveal better detail.
