Description

Deep in Auriga lies this little formation that, as best I can tell, has no distinct catalogue designation. If I were to guess, I'd say it's probably about 10,000 lights years away, mirroring the distance of the adjacent IC 417. But I have no way to know or verify that. Jar-Jar's "eyeballs" also look very similar to the nearby Tadpoles (IC 410). Perhaps they share a similar cause for their shapes, or perhaps it's just a coincidence. In any case, this object appears in a million images on Astrobin, but I've not ever seen anyone isolate it like this. This area is filled with swirls and loops that are interesting in their own right, but get overshadowed by the famous Spider, Fly, Tadpoles, and Flaming Star nebulas that frame the region. I hope this image spurs a bit of interest in going deeper on the less trumpeted aspects of this area of the sky. Because I can find no catalogue designation for this, I've added it as the ninth object in my personal WTF catalogue, which contains weird stuff I can find no information about.

This image is actually a very small crop from a much larger two-panel mosaic that I have yet to publish and spans the boundary between the two panels. I've processed this with a Foraxx palette, where other treatments I'm working on for this region may be based on other color combinations.
