Description

NGC4631, the Whale Galaxy and Dwarf Elliptical companion NGC4627, in the constellation Canes Venatici. This is from raw FITS data. The total exposure is around 78 minutes (1182 x 3.97-second subs), not counting subs rejected by Pixinsight. There is a lot going on here, with a central Starburst region pushing gas out of the Whale. There seems to be a halo that surrounds both galaxies, but I couldn't pull it out of the background noise without really uglifying (a new word) the image. More exposure time needed to pull that "out of the weeds". A small magnitude 16.2 spiral galaxy, PGC3794315, is easily seen at the far left above center.  The image is tightly cropped to hide some really noisy edges from field rotation and the neighbor's lights. Processed with Pixinsight.  A deconvolution routine sharpened the galaxy a bit. Color correction and noise reduction along with some other tweaks finished the process. Bortle-6/7, L-pro filter, eV-1.
