Description

This infrequently imaged object, also known as Gum 77, is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -22 degrees. This nebulae spans 2 degrees in our apparent view.

The emission nebula has a fair amount of interesting texture, include several dark nebulae. The patch of white nebulosity at upper left is vdB 113. At the very bottom edge, left of center is the tiny planetary nebula M1-40 (PK8-1.1). This interesting oval red nebula is only 6 arc-seconds in diameter. Both of these objects are identified on the mouseover.

The beautiful object M20 is just out of the FOV at the bottom of this image.
