The Orion Nebula, also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976, is a diffuse nebula located south of Orion's belt.6 It is one of the brightest nebulae in existence and can be seen with the naked eye on the sky night. It is located 1,270 ± 76 light-years from Earth,2 although its distance has now been measured at 1,350 light-years, and it has an approximate diameter of 24 light-years. Some documents refer to it as the Great Orion Nebula, and the oldest texts call it Ensis, a Latin word meaning "sword", a name also given to the star Eta Orionis, which is observed from Earth very close to the nebula. .7

The Orion Nebula is one of the most photographed, examined and investigated astronomical objects.8 From it decisive information has been obtained about the formation of stars and planets from colliding clouds of dust and gas. Astronomers have observed in its bowels protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, strong turbulence that reaches speeds of 700,000 kilometers per hour in the movement of gas particles, and photoionizing effects near very massive stars close to the nebula.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
