Description

I've often seen and tried to photograph these nebulae as they're always visible from Southern Australia. There is just so much detail that a still from a 200mm lens and APS-C sensor loses the impact. Time to try a panorama. This image was made with six 350mm exposures and has been cropped to 46 megapixels. It's sharp enough that there is structure visible in the Tarantula nebula. It has taken about 4 months of practice to get the panoramas to work and I'm pleased to learn a new skill. What an interesting galaxy, most likely distorted by proximity to the Milky Way and the SMC. It was in the news recently as a name change was considered. Magellan didn't do much except publicise it and has lately been criticised for his treatment of South American indigenous people. Perhaps the ancient Persian name 'White Ox' could be revived. Finally, this was taken in a Bortle 2 site some 3 hours west of Sydney, Australia.
