The Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888) is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus, located 4700 light-years from Earth and 25 light-years across. It is created by the fast stellar wind of the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 (HD 192163). The nebula's complex structures are likely the result of this strong stellar wind interacting with material ejected at an earlier stage. Surrounding the Crescent Nebula are the fringes of the Sadre region (IC1218), an emission nebula and H-II region surrounding the star Sadre. Faintly visible slightly to the left below the Crescent Nebula is the circular shape of the Soap Bubble Nebula (PN G075.5+01.7), a planetary nebula discovered by an amateur astrophotographer in 2007.

The picture was taken over 3 nights. The first in Berlin under a Bortle 6 sky, the other two nights in West-Germany under a Bortle 4 sky.

Der Sichelnebel (NGC 6888) ist ein Emissionsnebel im Sternbild Schwarn, der 4700 Lichtjahre von der Erde enfernt liegt und einen Durchmesser von 25 Lichtjahren hat. Er entsteht durch den schnellen Sternwind des Wolf-Rayet-Sterns WR 136 (HD 192163). Die komplexen Strukturen des Nebels sind wahrscheinlich das Ergebnis dieses starken Sternenwindes, der mit Material wechselwirkt, das in einer früheren Phase ausgestoßen wurde.
Um den Sichelnebel herum liegen die Ausläufer der Sadre-Region (IC1218), einem Emissionsnebel und H-II-Gebiet, das den Stern Sadre umgibt.
Ein Stück links unter dem Sichelnebel sieht man schwach die kreisrunde Form des Seifenblasennebels (PN G075.5+01.7), ein Planetarischer Nebel, der 2007 von einem Amateur-Astrofotographen entdeckt wurde.

Das Bild wurde an 3 Nächten aufgenommen. Die Erste in Berlin unter einem Bortle 6 Himmel, die anderen beiden Nächte in West-Deutschland unter einem Bortle 4 Himmel.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
