Description

A 3h OSC image -sharpened very slightly at the core by admixing the luminance into a high dynamic range composition with a deconvoluted image from  742x3s mono camera frames.  A small fraction of a 1h HA image was added into the red channel in order to highlight HA features.  Bortle 7 skies - some frames with the moon above the horizon.  The image also faintly shows a satellite galaxy of  M81 - Holmberg IX  -  just to the left side.

Messier 81 (Bode's Galaxy) is a spiral galaxy about 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.  It is about 96,000 ly in diameter , contains about 250 B stars and is the largest galaxy in the M81 Group, a group close by to the Andomeda Galaxy/ Milky Way- containing Local Group and which groups are  all part of the Virgo Supercluster.   There is a network of gaseous filamentary structures (IFN) which comprise hydrogen and other material stripped  away due to gravitational tidal interactions  in the space between M81 and the closeby galaxies , M82 and NGC3077.  Infall of this gas back into to the centres of M82 and NGC3077 has led to vigorous star formation there.

The galactic nucleus of M81 is active and harbours a 70M x solar mass black hole and M81 is suspected to comprise the source of FRB 20200120E, a repeating fast radio burst source.  Only one supernova, possibly a Type Ib, has thus far been detected from M81 .  SN 1993J detected in 1993 was the second brightest supernova  detected in the 20 th century with a peak magnitude of 10.7.
