Description

Jones-Emberson 1
PK 164 + 31.1
Headphones Nebula

Jones-Emberson 1 is an Ancient Planetary Nebula in the Constellation Lynx at a distance of 1600 LYs. It is a larger planetary with low surface brightness. The 16.8-magnitude central star is a blue-white dwarf. However, like many nebulae that escaped detection by early visual observers it can be a difficult object through the eyepiece. It was discovered on photographic plates in 1939 from Harvard Observatory where Rebecca Jones, its co-discoverer, also discovered another planetary that bears her name – Jones 1 in Pegasus.

Adendum:

First Light with my new Chroma SHO 3nm filters. There was some speculation on the orientation of the filters on the Cloudy Nights forum. Chroma stated there was NO orientation and other photographers had it both ways according to their equipment, so I conducted my own test of the SHO filter set on the Star Capella.

The results were the same on all 3 filters with 3-minute subs. With my gear it was concluded that the reflective side should be placed toward the camera and the shadow side toward the sky. I have included a raw H-alpha sub with both orientations in versions E & H and you can tell a dramatic difference in the two. Notice the feathering halos in the "incorrect" orientation in version E.

Thanks, Eddie
