This rendering uses an Artificial Intelligence technique, “Style Transfer” to alter an image of the Pleiades. The foundational image is here:

In Style Transfer, the content of one image (the foundation image) is altered to reflect the style of another image. For this rendering, the style was a painting called “Liquid Metal.” The stars and feathered nebula are recast as the whirlpools of the vicious, heavy, swirling liquid metal. The creation of this transfer image has several user/artist controls, such as what colors should be used (original image, style image, or a mix), how detailed the transfer should be, etc., and of course the most important input, namely the choice of the style image.
For this rendition, I preserved the stars and the directionality of the main nebula streamers but imposed the nested whirlpool details from the swirling metal image.
