Description

NGC6559 is an active star forming region in the constellation Sagittarius. The newly formed stars illuminate the hydrogen gas cloud seen as the blue areas where the starlight is reflecting off of the gas. This is known as a reflection nebula.  Meanwhile, the solar winds ionize the gas causing it to glow red which is known as an emission nebula. The dark, sinewy structures are dark nebulae made of dense dust, which obscures the light behind them. A small portion of its more famous neighbor, M8, the Lagoon Nebula, is seen in the upper right and usually steals the show, so this nebula is often overlooked.
