Description

A rather charred burger, without much relish or a bap for that matter - well we are out of practice! This was a foolhardy attempt to image at f10, under average seeing, after collimating my SCT using Metaguide. The software uses video (from an old webcam) to display an image of a bright star, and associated coma, providing detailed stats, and guidance as to which collimation knob to turn to re-centre this. Easy enough to collimate using a defocussed 'donut', but high power in-focus views were too bouncy to discern the airy disk.

I also implemented the new version of PHD with multiple star guiding, and managed to achieve an RMS ~0.8" which was quite reasonable given the conditions. Metaguide does that too, but requires an ASCOM connection to the mount. I have no guide inputs on my old LX mounts, but use ST4 on camera and interface to the hand-controller via a homemade relay box.

NGC 3628 - the 'hamburger' galaxy is a delight, although rather disappointing visually. My 2h 25m integration using 5m exposures through UV/IR cut filter is very noisy, but I was pleased to see a little detail in the strong dust lane that bisects this, even if it does not look very appetising.
