Description

Connected by a 22,000 light-year long thin stream of gas teased out by their interaction, Arp 104 (also known as Keenan's system) is composed of spiral galaxy NGC 5216 (left) and globular galaxy NGC 5218  (right).  In this highly cropped view, North is left and South is right. Arp 104 is in Ursa Major, and about 17M  ly from Earth.  Note the comma-shaped tidal tail off of the SE edge NGC 5218 as well as the capped-stream off the the East (upper) edge of NGC 5216, also a function of their gravitational interaction.  The thin stream of gas bridging the galaxies was described by Philip C. Keenan in 1935. This is a highly-cropped view, and version is wider-field view that includes a number of other interesting small galaxies, including the spiral galaxy NGC 5205. Version A is actually itself a substantially cropped image from the source framing.
