Description

This pair of galaxies, one of the most famous of the interacting galaxies in the sky, is commonly known as "The Mice" and has also been catalogued as Arp242. It is distant of 296 mly. The North component displays a spectacular "tadpole" tail structure with a bright collimated stream of matter at least four times larger than the host galaxy. The south component shows two more diffuse strams of faint matter emerging from its core. A faint bridge connects the cores of the two galaxies and they are undoubtely physically connected. The minimum core to core distance would be 52000 ly. at the presumed distance.
This is a very small object (2.0'x0.3' and 1.7'x0.7') and I was quite happy to be able to image it with my C8 at f=2000mm and f/D=10.
