Description

HSO rendering of IC1396, also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula in Cepheus. This target really needs no introduction, being both an astrophotographer's favorite in summer/early Fall (in northern hemisphere) as well as being a canonical specimen of the phenomenon of elephant trunks, dark lanes of dust obscuring starlight from behind and giving the appearance of pillars arising from the molecular cloud.

I am super chuffed by this image, but for slightly different reasons:
  1. My first time capturing over 5h of data on this target from a B1 location.
  2. My first capture using the (new to me) AP1200GTO, acquired recently in April 2023.
  3. My first ever unguided run with 300s subs!! That's a huge night-and-day difference between this mount and the CEM40 I previously used.

I have 1.2 arc-mins of PA error which I am hoping to eliminate tonight. i'll rely on Dec arc modeling and am aiming to collect ~4 more hours of data for a final run tonight.
