Description

NGC 2371
NGC 2372
Candy Nebula
Double Bubble Nebula

NGC 2371-2 is a Dual Lobed Planetary Nebula located in the Constellation Gemini at a distance of 4300 LY. It is the glowing remains of a Sun-like star with a super-hot core of a former Red Giant, now stripped of its outer layers. Its surface temperature is a scorching 240,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Eventually, the central star will gradually cool down, becoming a White Dwarf, the final stage of evolution for nearly all stars.

Visually, it appears like it could be two separate objects; therefore, two entries were given to the planetary nebula in the New General Catalogue, so it may be referred to as NGC 2371 or NGC 2372.

The PN is rich in both Oxygen III and Hydrogen-alpha and shows up well in each filter.

Thanks, Eddie
