Description

Statistically speaking we are long overdue a supernova in our own Milky Way galaxy.  Until that time we have to make do with such events in galaxies far, far away.  So it is, with Supernova SN 2024gy in the near edge on sprial galaxy NGC 4216, in the constellation of Virgo.

Discovered a few weeks ago on 4th January I turned my Esprit 150 on it for several hours over 2 nights last week.  In reality of course, the actual event happened a mere 55 million years ago, being the distance in light years to the host galaxy, NGC 4216.  A rough comparison to nearby stars of similar brightness, showed the supernova to be shining at around magnitude 13.5.

Lots of other galaxies are also in this image, my favourite being the face on barred spiral NGC 4189 towards the bottom of the image.
