This was shot over the short length of an entire astronomical night (about 5 hours) on a nice clear night this week. Using the UHC filter produced, I think, a really nice image. I realized only in post-processing that the Garnet star is just outside of the FOV of the image (its the source of the glow in the upper right corner). Had I realized, I would have adjusted the camera center a bit, but, in the end, I kind of like that it provides a ghostly glow....

As with all my images, I like to learn something from the experience. From this one,

1. I have had several sessions this summer with a single blurry image mid-session. I realized on this one that this is caused when the tracking crosses the zero point of the mount and the telescope weight shifts from being east to west weighted as it crosses. Once the weight shifts, PHD2 seems to recover and everything it good again after that.

2. With this target and also the Cave Nebula I worked on this week, I am starting imaging as soon as they are visible above the neighboring houses and collecting through the night until they are at almost the highest point in the sky. Looking through the raw light frames sequentially, the images get notably darker as the target rises throughout the night. The difference in light pollution with altitude is really stunning: SQM-L meter arrived two days ago, and I think it will tell me that my light pollution is pretty bad....

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
