Description

This image is made from about 5.5 hours of Ha and OIII data and 1.5 hours of RGB for the stars. This version is Ha for red, 40% Ha + 60% OIII for green, and OIII for blue. So far, other combinations have been brighter but with loss of detail. Mouse over is 2x inset.
Sh2-71 is a planetary nebula with unusually complex morphology comprising multiple pairs of bipolar lobes oriented along different axes and with likely different ages. The identity of the star(s) of origin is controversial. The central white star in this image has been called an eclipsing binary pair. It is a candidate, but some favor a smaller adjacent star that is not visible here. The most recent paper on Sh2-71 that I’ve found is from 2015 and is quite accessible:
