Description

I observed this object on 6 January 2014 at Havelock North, New Zealand using an Explore Scientific ED80 Refractor: Faint. Large cluster without a highly concentrated core.

I obtained the calibrated lights frames used to create the final image from Telescope Live. The frames were imaged by the CHI-1-CMOS Telescope at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile.

NGC 6397 is one of the easiest globular clusters to resolve due to a 12.9 magnitude horizontal branch. Only M4 is closer. Has undergone core collapse.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: IX
Distance: 7,829 LY
Type: Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Just below the galactic disc and about a third of the way to the center.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: Yes
