Description

Small cluster of bright galaxies located underneath the hind limbs of Leo. Pictured here are the galaxies M65, M66, and NGC3628.

It's been longer than anticipated since my previous imaging session, but I guess that's how the weather goes. I actually made an attempt at imaging this cluster in 2019, but my problematic autoguiding preventing any usable data collection. I still encountered some problems this time around, but I'm learning from each issue and slowly ironing out all the kinks. As before, please share any feedback, suggestions, or criticisms!

I wasn't really planning to image this evening until about 8:00 PM when I checked the weather forecasts. Skies were predicted to be cloud free with decent seeing and average transparency, which surprised me since we had visible smoke in the skies from Canada wildfires earlier that day. I decided to get the rig assembled and was ready to start imaging by 10:00 PM. During setup, I noticed a significant amount of backlash in the declination axis of my CGEM DX - I could see the movement of the mount just by wiggling the telescope with my hands. This could explain some of the guiding issues I've noticed and is pushing me more towards getting a DSS hypertune kit. Everything ran fairly smooth once the imaging program was underway, however, and I was hoping to get about 4 hours of data before losing the object behind the garage. High altitude clouds, transient declination errors, and an unprompted Windows update (!@$#) knocked down the usable data to about 1.5 hours. Lesson learned... I'm still fairly happy with the result, and I'll be sure to revisit this object in another year with much more experience.
