Description

This close up focuses on a region of the nebula containing HH-555, which is a Herbig-Haro object.

A Herbig-Haro (HH) object is a type of astronomical entity associated with newborn stars, particularly those still in the process of formation. These objects are named after astronomers George Herbig and Guillermo Haro, who independently studied them.

Herbig-Haro objects are created when narrow jets of partially ionized gas, ejected by young stars, collide with surrounding interstellar material. These collisions produce shock waves that heat and ionize the gas, causing it to emit light. The resulting bright patches of nebulosity are observable in regions of active star formation, often near young stars or within star-forming regions like stellar nurseries.

Studying Herbig-Haro objects provides valuable insights into the early stages of star formation and the interaction between newly formed stars and their surrounding environments.
