Description

So believe it or not, even after all these years doing this, I've never shot the Horsehead before, which is totally wild because it's an iconic object that everyone remembers seeing in their dusty encyclopedias or on the covers of tattered science textbooks growing up (for those of us folks who grew up in the barbaric pre-internet days).  Not only is it pretty to look at, but shooting it made me realize that it's iconic for a reason:  it's just a really a great object.  It gets high-ish in the sky where I am, has ridiculously strong signal, and contains reflection and emission and dusty elements.  What's not to love about all that?  So it was a pleasure to capture and process, and I feel like a true blue astrophotographer now that I've undergone this rite of passage.

I barely did anything at all, processing this.  Didn't do deconvolution, or really any sharpening.  I did tinker a little with the dark dusty bits and reflection elements, just to get some detail,  but nothing major, just some masking and blending.  I also shot a bunch of Ha but I found, to my surprise, that it didn't add much--on its own as part of a narrowband treatment it might be cool, but I just couldn't blend it in and feel it added much.  Totally not what I expected.  Anyway!  Checking this one off the list and moving on...  One day I'll do a mosaic with the flame: maybe next year.
