Description

Took the fly by opportunity to snap a few quick shots of NEO '99942 Bruce Willis'....sorry 'Apophis'. The asteroid was up to about a maximum of 30 degrees above the horizon in the South which would usually be below my observatory's observable limit at this azimuth. Luckily the flyby coincided with me installing a newly made pier extension which raised the scope just enough to make the observations. Even still Apophis was skimming the trees even at it's highest elevation which is evident in the animation.

I could see from my locator program that Apophis was moving pretty slowly against the background so I went back to my old SCT OTA and camera to take the shots. While I was imaging I could not see any object moving in relation to the field stars but I was looking for a brighter spot. I thought I was pretty much centered on the asteroid but it took me a while comparing the field to a planetarium program to finally locate a smudge of nothingness pushing through the high background noise in the far top left corner of the field.
