Description

I went ahead and used andromeda galaxy as my primary target for some time after switching to a dedicated astronomy camera. My what a difference a good camera makes! Color balancing is much easier, and it does a much better job capturing detail in the dust lanes of the galaxy. I decided to leave more stars in this image for a more natural look.

Title: M31 - Andromeda Galaxy Revision 1 with More Data

Description: Added about 3 more hours of 3 minute subframes to this one. It certainly helped with the noise a bit! Like my Triangulum revision, I went ahead and applied my new processing technique to this data. Originally, I stacked in DSS and then did just about everything else in photoshop with a little Starnet action in between. This led to some rather haphazard guesses about white points, black points, and color balance/saturation.

I am now primarily processing in Siril: start with the OSC Preprocessing Script, Photometric Color Calibration, Green Noise Removal, Background Extraction, and Starnet Star Removal (with pre-stretch and no drizzle). Then an optional gentle Asinh Transformation, a few rounds of Histogram stretching, and some Color Saturation (global), before exporting a tif into PS for some NoiseXterminator, and more fine tuned saturation, sharpening, noise reduction, and color work with the Camera Raw tool. Then that tif comes back into Siril and is saved as a fit for star recombination. This process gives me much better control over the image colors, saturation, and balance, and better control over star size than my old method, and I'm much more pleased with the result!
