Hi Everyone! I'm new to astrophotography (only been doing it for a few months) but I'm fairly experienced with visual astronomy and did some work in radio astronomy for a couple years. I got into astrophotography when I got asked to teach a class on telescope use at my local community college and was told that students would take photos as part of the course. Not wanting to teach something I was inexperienced at, I decided to give astrophotography a try and have come to find that I really enjoy it. I'm in Los Angeles, CA (Bortle 9  ) and use an 80mm f/7.5 apo and a Canon T7i to shoot from my home. Before the quarantine I also had access to my school's 11in f/10 SCTs. I'm still really new to photo processing (I'm using Nebulosity to capture and stack, photoshop/lightroom to touch up) and don't have much in the way of astrophotography equipment yet, but hope to learn a lot while pursuing this hobby.Clear skies, Ace |

Hi Ace, You can still take reasonable deep sky pictures from Los Angeles. I have been trying myself for some time, it just needs good light pollution filter. Look at my astrobin pictures taken from Los Angeles. Alternatively, you can make a trip to Mt. Pinos for pretty dark sky. Tomas |

Welcome, Ace. I live near Pomona under wonderful Bortle 8 skies!! Astrophotography is possible, and is even rewarding under light pollution, but it's so much better when you get out to dark skies. Most of my older photos are from home, but the more recent ones are nearly all from dark skies. Best of luck and do reach out if you have questions. Ron |
