Description

For this shot, I just surfed around the HIPS to FITS Sky Survey and tried to find a place that didn't have anything labeled in it. I wanted to shoot something off the beaten path. Because of that, my working title for this image was "F$&# Around and Find Out" (FAAFO). Turns out that it's quite an interesting area that is part of the much larger Sh2-27. A more detailed plate solve revealed that it's got quite a lot going on and is a fairly neglected area on Astrobin. When it appears at all on AB, it's usually adjunct to shots of Rho Oph or the Blue Horsehead, which is just to the south. On the few shots where it is specifically targeted, there's no real consensus on how to shoot it or process it. @Brian Boyle has a wonderful broadband wide-angle of the entire region that is probably the best treatment I've seen of Sh2-27:

@John Gleason also has a compelling Ha version that was IOTD five years ago:

There are a few other nice images of it, but not many. I find that exhilarating and plan to give this area a pretty thorough narrowband treatment with my 61mm refractor this summer.

I've included more information in my closeup of the runaway star Zeta Ophiuchi here:
