Description

At approximately 18 x 9 arcmin, the Ghost Nebula is a small target for the Esprit 100's focal length of 550 mm. Designated Sh2-136 in the Sharpless catalogue of H II regions as well as VdB 141 in Sidney van den Bergh's catalog of reflection nebulae, the Ghost Nebula is also designated as a Bok Globule ( Bok globule CB230) that is located in the same star-forming region (the Cepheus Flare molecular cloud) as the much larger and brighter Iris Nebula.  Interestingly, when I imaged the Iris Nebula last year with a modified DSLR, the Ghost Nebula itself was a small and indistinguishable smudge; better camera and added imaging time (nearly 11 hours versus a little over 2 hours)  have at least revealed some detail. Still, I can hear the cautionary note of other respected astrophotographers: I probably have not "earned the right" to display the data I am trying to show at this crop level. Need a bigger scope!
