Description

"THE MILKYWAY TWIN CADWELL 101"
- Deepsky 2857mm LRGB
- Area Constellation Pavo/Peacock

NGC 6744 is a barred spiral galaxy of Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Peacock. NGC 6744 has a magnitude of 8.3 mag and an angular extent of 20.1 × 12.9 arcminutes. This makes it one of the apparently brightest and largest galaxies in our night sky. It is about 33 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of almost 150,000 light years[4]. The galaxy has a clear spiral structure and there is a faint bar at its center. This consists mainly of old stars with a yellowish glow.
Red patches are visible in the spiral arms - clouds of gas and dust containing young, massive stars that emit intense ultraviolet light. This radiation causes the gas surrounding the stars to glow. In the optical spectral range, it reveals itself primarily through the reddish light of the H-alpha spectral line typical of hydrogen. NGC 6744 has an irregular companion galaxy with the designation NGC 6744A, which can be seen at the top right of the outer spiral arm.
