Description

Went out to the dark sky property in Arizona this weekend, Semper Tenebris -- we had two clear nights, and I got some good shots! I brought an Astro-Tech 72ED that I picked up from a friend last year with me, along with my iOptron CEM40 mount. Here's the first result -- the Rosette Nebula! I haven't imaged it since 2021 back in California, The Rosette holds a special place for me because it was the subject of my first "good" astrophoto back in 2017, which won me 2nd place in the Astronomical League's Imaging Award competition (https://www.astrobin.com/284412/B/?nc=&nce=#r0, with my DSLR on the astronomy club's refractor!).

The Rosette Nebula is a large hydrogen emission region and stellar nursery in the constellation Monoceros ("the Unicorn"), which is next door to Orion. It lies about 5,000 lightyears away, but is large enough that it still spans more than a degree on the sky (2-3x the size of the full Moon) at 65 lightyears across. The hot, young stars near the center energize the hydrogen gas, causing it to glow, as well as carving out the shape of the nebula.

The Astro-Tech 72ED is a doublet, so I expected some serious purple fringing, but in fact there was very little fringing, and BlurXterminator took care of what little there was. I forgot to use the field flattener it came with, so the edges were distorted and I cropped them out, but with this camera having an APS-C chip, the distortion didn't start till about 3/4 of the way out from center, which is pretty good. Color me impressed! I cropped it closer than I needed to for a nice balanced field. It's a nice compact scope with a very smooth focuser that I'm planning on using for the solar eclipse.
We added some insulation and a large shelf to the shed, added some caulk and paint, and brought in some cots, a heater, kitchen supplies, a cooler, and other things to make our camping lives easier. We had chilly weather up at the 5500' of elevation we're at, but we had two clear nights, and especially once we got the insulation up on the ceiling, we were nice and warm.
