Description

W63 is a large and faint supernova remnant located in a complex region of nebulosity in Cygnus. Otherwise catalogued as G82.2+5.3, the name of W63 comes from the Westerhout catalogue of radio sources, which was published by the astronomer Gart Westerhout in 1958. The optical emission seems to be exclusively reserved to the [OIII] emission line and requires a long exposure to be visible. Various dark nebulae from the LDN catalogue obscure parts of this region.

This image was painstakingly pieced together over 19 seperate imaging session during the very short summer nights. Sometimes only 1 hour of data a night. It was very difficult to pull the OIII data and make it stand out over the abundant Ha data in the region. The OIII data is not just in the area of the shell, but all over the field of view, causing the Ha to take on the different hues of red and orange in the image. It was a fun project and I really like the result. To me it appears as of the OIII is floating above the Ha data, gives it a nice touch of depth.
