IC 5146 Cocoon First Light 294MM

Needed a fairly bright object to test out new ASI294MM during full moon phases, so I picked god old Cocoon.

I had one of the first ASI294MMs delivered last winter. It gave me a lot of problems with narrowband calibration, flats nearly impossible to get right. I returned it. I was left with a filter wheel and a set of 31mm Astrodons that did not work with my new ASI2600MM. I thought about selling them, but decided to try another 294MM now that they have been in production for a while and may have initial bugs resolved.

I took narrowband and wideband lights of this target and made corresponding sky flats and the usual darks and flat darks. I did not see the crazy blobs in the flats through the narrowbandfilters that I had experienced with first camera. Everything calibrated well, no banding or other distortions evident.

There was really no OIII signal in this target, and I did not find SHO, HSS, or HSO color blends to be very attractive, so I only fully processed the HaRGB combination. I'm fairly happy with this for first light. I will need to find optimum gains and and exposures for using it with my telescopes. I have not tried Bin1 mode as yet.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
