Description

The Target:
IC443/Sh2-248, also known as the 'Jellyfish Nebula', is a spectacular Galactic Supernova Remnant that appeared in the night sky between 3,000 and 30,000 years ago.
It is approximately 5,000 light years from Earth and lies in the constellation of Gemini
A collapsing, dying star produced the nebula and it is likely that the left over material will eventually coalesce into new stars and perhaps new planetary systems.
The yellow giant star illuminating the nebula is Propus (Eta Geminorum) and is much bigger than our Sun, having 250% of our sun’s mass or 2.5 solar masses. It lies close in the sky to the brighter and better known stars Castor and Pollux , and in fact forms the third corner of a triangle with these two. It is much farther away than either Castor or Pollux, though, and appears correspondingly fainter.
IC443 is a truly incredible spectacle and it's hard to comprehend the forces at work during the formation of this nebula.

The Image:
I gathered narrowband data for this project using Optolong 3nm filters and decided to edit the image in the SHO 'Hubble' palette, I normally reduce the greens in this type of image but I pretty much left it alone here as I felt it added depth to the photo. I also adjusted the light glow and contrast around Propus to enhance its presence and add depth to the other side of the image.
This was a rewarding target both to image and process...

Clear Skies‼️
Olly
