Description

A full-frame camera used with just 480mm of focal length provides for a fairly wide field of view (4.30° x 2.87°).  This is usually adequate to capture even the largest of deep sky objects, but when you bring in the option of mosaics with a wide field of view, you open up new possibilities of viewing the night sky.  For example, Horsehead and Orion are probably two of the most commonly imaged deep sky objects.  The vast majority of the images captured on these two amazing targets are tightly centered on either the Horsehead or Orion.  But when you bring them both into the same image, the entire region around them comes alive with the HII of the Orion molecular cloud complex.

This image was a "proof of concept" thrown together on New Year's Eve to see if the final product would be worthy pursuing as a full-up HaRGB image.  It is a two-panel, HDR mosaic and overall, I was pleased with the results considering just a little over four hours of integration time and the moon phase (~75% illuminated).  I decided to pursue the HaRGB image and was able to capture some additional Ha data a few nights later (not integrated into this image), but unfortunately the clouds did not cooperate and I was unable to gather the RGB data necessary to complete this mosaic back in January.  I will now have to wait until the Fall when this area of the sky is imageable again.
