=MsoNormalSharpless 101 (Sh2-101) also known as the Tulip Nebula, which resembles in shape, is an emission nebula in the HII region, visible in the constellation of Cygnus. It is located on the initial stretch of the Orion Arm about 2700 parsecs (8750 LY) away from the solar system, beyond the large nebula complex of Cygnus X. The source of the ionizing radiation in the nebula's gases is believed to be the star HD 227018, a blue giant with an apparent magnitude of about 9. The nebula would host some active star formation phenomena.
Sh2-101, at least prospectively from Earth, is in the vicinity of the X-ray source Cygnus X-1, site of one of the first alleged black holes. Cygnus X-1 is part of a large mass X-ray binary formed, in addition to the compact object, by a variable blue supergiant (HDE 226868) with a mass of 21 solar masses and 20 times the radius of the Sun. The black hole has a mass of 15 solar masses and a Schwarzschild radius of 45 km. The matter spiraling from HDE 226868 towards the compact object loses energy, a part of which is dissipated through relativistic jets. One of the jets collides with a relatively dense region of the interstellar medium, forming an energetic ring observable in radio and visible waves, in which it appears as a faint nebulosity that can be glimpsed as an arc in the upper center of the photo.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
