Description

2-13-24.  A snowstorm had just passed and I had a few clear hours with fairly poor seeing to test my Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens out on a deep sky target.  I chose the Horsehead nebula area and did a 20 minute test exposure in 30 sec subs using my 533MC astrocam.  The result was poor and the lens, at least mine, is not up to AP.  Too many star aberrations.  I did my best to get some kind of result in post-processing, but this only helped superficially.  Any small telescope would have done a better job.  I guess this remains a daytime wildlife lens for me.

My plan is instead use my Takahashi FSQ 106 N telescope at f5 530mm FL or my Esprit 80 F5 at 400mm focal length instead of this Canon 400mm f2.8 lens of 135mm unstopped aperture.  The stars will just be cleaner and free of coma.
