Description

The Jellyfish Nebula is part of a bubble-shaped supernova remnant in the constellation Gemini, located 5,000 light years from Earth. The light from the expanding debris cloud illustrated in the image is from a massive star that exploded over 30,000 years ago. In addition to the waves of debris, the explosion also left behind a neutron star, the remnant of a collapsed core of a giant star which, before collapse, had a total mass of between 10 and 29 solar masses. Neutron stars are the smallest and densest stars, excluding black holes, and have some of the strongest gravitational and magnetic fields in the universe.
