Description

Recent wonderful images of this nebula by @Marco Lorenzi and @Andrew Murrell inspired to have a crack at this, lesser well-known of the Southern Milky May Menagerie.

Known as The Betta Fish nebula, this DSO is a fragment of a 14,000 year old supernova remnant  G296.5+10 or ESO 217-25.  Other fragments are visible in the large field image by @Marco Lorenzi but I decided to use my RC12 to focus on perhaps the most intricate and extensive part of the SNR.

I also attempted to replicate - as far as possible - the Betta Fish "look" with this tropical fish swimming towards the left, trailing a long diaphanous fin.    Given the intergration, I was also able to reproduce the three faint extensions to the [OIII] emission [in a trident shape] ahead of this trailing fin.   The SNR fragment is also bathed in faint Halpha and OIII emission , with numerous smll fragments of the SNR visible through their [OIII] emission in a large field view [Version B].
