Description

At a distance of 29.7 m light years, NGC 891 sits quietly amongst an intense star field, and even in raw subs, its glow is subdued in my Bortle 5 skies.  With post processing you can bring out the contrast and color of this beautiful edge-on galaxy which is located in Andromeda.  This time of year it comes up above the horizon at 1:00a, and allows me to capture about 2-hours worth of subs, before the summer dawn creeps in to the Eastern sky.  The dark bands of dust are striking and add an almost 3D effect.

When viewing our own Milky Way galaxy, we can photograph the dark, dusty bands which obscures the center of our own galaxy.  When compared to NGC 891, it is easy to see this is a common feature of most all spiral galaxies.
