Description

Comet C/2023 E1 (ATLAS) was discovered on March 1st 2023 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) network. It is classed as a Halley-type comet, with an orbital period of 85.1 years. At the time the image was taken, the comet was 0.683 A.U or about 63.5 million miles from us and will reach perihelion (closest to the Sun) on July 1st. It is currently around magnitude 10 or slightly brighter and moving slowly through Ursa Minor, which is good news for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere!

This one was quite a challenge, the coma is fairly bright, but the tail is not visible on individual subs, so difficult to frame and process. Fortunately the comet was travelling quite slowly, so I could increase the exposure time a bit. I also remembered that the tail always points away from the Sun, so I knew where it should be!

I'm surprised to have got anything at all just 3 days past the longest day!

Clear (and dark) skies!

Tony.
