Description

Spectrum of Gamma Cassiopeiae. Imaged with SA-100 diffraction grating objective mounted on 135mm SLR lens and SBIG ST-8300M camera. 30 45s light frames and 30 dark frames calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagesPlus. Spectrum calculated by RSpec. The spectrum has been corrected for instrument response.

Gamma Cas is a subgiant emission star of classification B0.5 IVe; it spins rapidly and is probably surrounded by a decretion disk of ejected gas. The emission lines likely originate with that disk.

The two prominent hydrogen emission lines are indicated in yellow. The absorption features indicated by blue labels are caused by the Earth's atmosphere.
