The Northern Trifid Nebula

NGC 1579, nicknamed the Northern Trifid Nebula for its resemblance to M20, looks for all the world as if, like M20, it a combination of emission and reflection nebulosity. In fact, it a reflection nebula through and through. The cause of its emission-mimicking, reddish color is the embedded, massive, very young star that is the primary source of its illumination. This star emits primarily in the H-alpha portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, rather than in the UV portion. This already red light is further reddened as it is scattered and attenuated by NGC 1579. The result is an uncommon, red reflection nebula, that has a more common, bluish hue on its periphery. IC 2067, the nebula to the upper left of NGC 1579, is a run-of-the-mill, blue reflection nebula. NGC 1579 is a bright part of the much larger California Molecular Cloud, so named because it contains the California Nebula.

Description: In the intervening time since I posted my last revision, I "discovered" the recently released AI version of GraXpert. I decided to reprocess my data from scratch to see whether using this software would make a positive difference to the outcome. It certainly did! The more nuanced gradient removal achieved by GraXpert AI revealed a lot of subtle structure in the dim nebulosity surrounding NGC 1579 that was missing from my previous two versions.
