Description

The Monkey Head Nebula, also known as NGC 2174, is a diffuse emission nebula located in the constellation Orion. It is located approximately 6,400 light-years away from Earth and spans about 70 light-years across. The nebula is named for its resemblance to the head of a monkey, with two large eyes and a mouth. The Monkey Head Nebula is part of a larger complex of nebulae and star-forming regions in the Orion molecular cloud, which is one of the closest regions of active star formation to Earth. The Monkey Head Nebula is illuminated by a cluster of young, hot stars that are embedded within the nebula. These stars are still in the process of forming and are surrounded by dusty disks, which may eventually give rise to planets. The intense ultraviolet radiation from these stars ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to glow brightly.
