Description

The Pinwheel Galaxy (also known as M 101, or NGC 5457) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. The galaxy was discovered in 1781 by Charles Messier and Pierre Méchain. William Herschel was the first to observe small spots (which were actually fragments of spiral arms) surrounding the galaxy.  In excellent condition, M101 can be observed even with simple binoculars; in fact, thanks to its extension and its relative proximity to us, M101 is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky. Its identification is easy, thanks to the presence of a striking concatenation of sixth and seventh magnitude stars to the east of the bright star Mizar. Its size requires the use of fairly low magnifications for its observation; However, a telescope of at least 250 mm is needed to begin to distinguish the brighter nucleus and the fragments of the spiral arms. The arms themselves offer, in good condition, a beautiful sight with a 400 mm wide-field telescope.  Cit. Wikipedia.
