Description

This is an image of the annular solar eclipse of October 14, 2023, taken from my front patio north of Ellensburg, WA.  It is straight out of camera, with no processing or alteration of any kind (except what the camera did internally).

We are located north of the path of annularity.  It was overcast all morning, except for a thinning of the clouds right around the time of maximum coverage.  The image here was taken with my Canon 7D and a cheap 55-250mm lens at 250mm.  The image is exactly how it appeared to the naked eye.  There was a small thinning of the clouds right around this time, and the clouds acted as a natural filter.  We got maybe 15 minutes of visibility in total.

My wife and I were chatting in the living room and noticed that the room was getting darker.  So we decided to head out and sit on the front porch to see if we could notice any real time dimming as it got close to maximum coverage.  We didn't see that, but were treated to a super surreal view where the naked eye view was exactly as shown here.  It was just "there" in the sky.  Cool!

I normally list the capture details here, but there really isn't much to tell.  I regularly use aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual, and I honestly don't remember which mode the camera was in.  Since I didn't know how much time I would have, I didn't plan the shot.  I just pointed, thumbed the wheel to about 1/3rd of a stop below a normal exposure and hit the shutter button.  The EXIF data shows F/6.6 for 1/600th of a second at ISO 800, and this is what I got.  I took a bunch of images over the course of a few minutes, and this one is representative of most of them.

It's pretty unremarkable, except for the fact that this is also the naked eye view.
